John West Tjupurrula

John West Tjupurrula is the son of Freddt West Tjakamarra and Payu Napaltjarri. He has several sublings who paint with Papunya Tula Artists, including Bobby West Tjupurrula. John West painted his first works with the arts centre in 2002, but it wasn't until 2019 when he began painting more steadily, and over the last 5 years has developed his own unique style. In 2024 John was a finalist in the Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW; He has travelled to both USA and UK for group exhibitions, as well as taking part in panels clebrating the 50 years of The Papunya Tula Artists and the incredible Western Desert art movement.

Wynne Prize Finalist from June 8


John West Tjupurrula has been selected for the first time as a finalist in this year's Wynne Prize.This painting of his country is based on an aerial view of Palipalintja in Western Australia.



The Wynne Prize is currently on tour and is now at the Western Plains Cultural Centre in Dubbo until Nov 24.
